Jules Hanon
Stop the truck and pull over, I feel a little bit too sober It is impossible to imagine a movement like Jules Hanon isolated in time and space. In the first place, because it was not stamped with revolutionary character it does not arouse vigorous reaction. Secondly, because it was formed by way of its own architecture it exercises no great power. It sits still and moves quickly. Jules Hanon seeks to explain its existence with an aid of a through-going system of speculation. Far from being an illusion, it traces itself back to the finer principles of music, underlying it with diversity. This rationalistic doctrine, so deeply imbued with its own sense of reality, is of course bound to conduce to a form of asceticism. For the humble listener as for the philosopher there is still something more important that the echoes of the Hanonist Tenet. I refer to the awakening of the interest in the soul. It is not that the word, the music and the feeling do not exist ; they are real but utterly different from what we suppose them to be. Out of this grows the conviction that only the magical methods of the Hanon could validly explore the universe of divergence. Following exposure, the listener finds himself/herself back on an equal footing with the contemplative realization of Jules Hanon.
